The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is a cornerstone of Canada’s immigration system, allowing international graduates of Canadian educational institutions to gain valuable work experience. With a validity of up to three years, the PGWP provides a pathway to Canadian permanent residency through programs like the Canadian Experience Class (CEC).
As an open work permit, the PGWP allows its holder to work for any employer, in any location in Canada, and even switch jobs freely.

Post-Graduation Work Permit Duration
The length of the Post-Graduation Work Permit depends on the duration of the completed study program:

---|---|
Less than 8 months | Ineligible |
8 to 24 months | Valid for up to the same duration as the study program. |
24 months or longer | Up to 3 years. |
Multiple eligible programs | Combined duration may result in a PGWP valid for up to 3 years. |
Important Notes:
- The PGWP is not renewable. Graduates are advised to plan their transition to permanent residency or other work permits before their Post-Graduation Work Permit expires.
- For part-time students, exceptions apply if part-time enrollment occurred during the final semester or was authorized due to COVID-19.
